Budget cuts forced the North Carolina Symphony to cancel its popular Pops in the Park concert, but the musicians wanted to still give a free concert for the public. Kudzu: A Southern Musical / Productions!
KUDZU was presented by Piedmont Players Theatre at the historic Meroney Theatre in Salisbury, NC, November 12-15 and 18-21, 2009. From the Salisbury Post, November 5th, 2009:
Earlier this year, Central Carolina College Students and Friends performed the Jack Herrick-Doug Marlette-Bland Simpson musical to sell-out crowds at Chatham Mills in Pittsboro, NC, April 24- May 3, with direction by Ellen Bland and musical direction by Creighton Irons. RCR was honored to perform with the North Carolina Symphony New Year's Eve of 2008, premiering three new orchestrations for "string band with orchestra" and one new suite composed and orchestrated by our own Jack Herrick. We performed with the symphony again on June 6, 2009 at the Koka Booth Amphitheater at Regency Park in Cary.
The popularity of the collaboration has led the orchestra members to request our presence at a special free concert in Moore Square (downtown Raleigh) on September 12. Stay tuned for more details...
